On October 23, 2000, the Park dedicated a 55 foot long mural by the acclaimed environmental artist Wyland. The life-size marine life mural will raise our awareness about the shrinking West Indian manatee population along the Florida Coast. "The manatees are among the most gentle marine mammals in the ocean. If they disappear, we will have lost one of the world's legendary creatures. This mural is our way of spreading the word that these mammals need to be respected and protected.", says Wyland.

The dedication ceremony on October 23, was attended by a huge crowd of "locals" and Wyland followers. County Commissioner Gary Bartell spoke on behalf of the citizens of Citrus County, thanking the artist and his people for this priceless gift.

Others pictured are Larry Shearin, who was instrumental in persuading Wyland to come to Homosassa. Next to Larry is the mayor of Crystal River, who gave Wyland the symbolic key to the city. Tom Linley, park manager, accepted the mural on behalf of the Homosassa Springs Wildlife Park.
