It’s all about Metalwork

Metalwork is a necessary part of any building and repairing project. Like other projects there are complicated steps to achieve a look but the basics of metalwork involves simply, marking, cutting, drilling, filing and joining. There are other like welding, grinding and machining but this set requires advance skills.

Metalwork is not that difficult despite that you still need the skills, knowledge and the equipment to aid you in the project. Good thing that most of the tools needed for metal work like the flap disc can be purchased in the hardware store and online.

  • Marking

There is an importance when it comes to marking the metal that you wanted cut or drilled. This is to ensure that the resulting piece is accurately cut and drilled. It also helps to keep the drill from spinning away. Sometimes when you are marking, there are some metals that will make it hard for you to see the marks and so some will use a dye that will allow them to see the mark more easily. You can even use a felt tip marker in a pinch.

  • Cutting

Metals can be cut by either a hacksaw, cold chisel or the sheet metal snips. You just have to identify which one works better for the kind of metal you are working it. And even then there are also things like the hacksaw who has different types, study each type and what good they are for. That way you can use the tools in its most advantage. You can be safe and you don’t have to get injured trying to finish your project.

  • Drilling

There are many types of drill bits you can use when drilling into metals. Like the second point, you should know which one to use better to ensure that you are using it to its full advantage. In order to do this, you should first look at the kind of metal you are working on. That way you can use it as a  guide on which bit would work perfectly into making holes.

  • Filing

This is the process of smoothing out the metalwork that you have. There are still so many types you can use for filing. There are basic ones and advance filing techniques however, for the basic filing a standard double cut mill file and single cut mill file is a good start. Besides making the metal work filing can also be used to sharpen some objects like the axes or lawnmower blades.

  • Joining

Joining a metalwork basically will mostly use a blind rivet. Blind rivets is useful most especially with the thin pieces of metalwork we’ll say an aluminum for example and most especially if you don’t  have an access at the back. It is a pretty easy tool to use to join two pieces of metals.

In working with metals one should always remember to work safely and thus any things like safety should be given priority. In order to not make any mistakes as much as possible it is important that one should prepare a game plan and accepts expert guidance.
